Latest Donation Has Eyes on the Future of Medical Research & Education

A pair of local surgeons are keeping their legacy of giving to the Windsor-Essex community alive.
In 2022, Dr. Fouad Tayfour and Dr. Barry Emara came forward with a $250,000 donation to establish the ‘Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund’.
Last year, they donated $330,000, continuing the focus on healthcare research and training with a goal of better patient care.
The latest funding installment will be split between two important areas - $130,000 towards the “Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund” and $100,000 towards general, ophthalmology equipment, for a total donation of $230,000 in 2024.
"The partnership with Windsor Regional Hospital continues to have a positive impact on the community we serve,” explains Dr. Tayfour. “Within a short period of time we have decreased cataract wait times, recruited more Ophthalmologists to Windsor and allowed for other elective procedures to be completed in the hospital.”
“Supporting this important research fund demonstrates how this new partnership model can have lasting benefits for the community,” adds Dr. Emara.
"Through this model, we are also looking at ways we can continue to improve the patient experience in ophthalmology as well as in other surgical specialties.”
Following its launch, the ‘Tayfour-Emara Excellence in Research & Education Fund’ dramatically expanded the scale and scope of research infrastructure at Windsor Regional Hospital helping to support research targeting underserved and key demographic areas in our local community.
“This helps with recruiting and attracting the next generation of healthcare researchers and providers to the region,” says Karen Riddell, Acting President & CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital.
With continued investment, these funds will help sustain excellence and educational activities at Windsor Regional Hospital well into the future.
“The generousity of Dr. Tayfour and Dr. Emara is beyond measure,” says Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation Executive Director Cristina Naccarato. “The continued support of this research fund has helped plant the seed which will see healthcare innovation continue to grow in Windsor-Essex for years to come.”
