WRH Expands Parking Access for Cancer Centre Patients

Windsor Regional Hospital is introducing a new parking option for Cancer Centre patients aimed at improving access to care and helping address long-standing parking capacity challenges at its Metropolitan Campus.
Effective immediately, cancer patients and their support persons will be able to access designated parking at WRH’s Kildare staff parking lot (1591 Kildare Road) and ride a complimentary shuttle directly to the Cancer Centre entrance on the southwest corner of Met Campus. This shuttle service is being offered at no cost to cancer centre patients.
The initiative is designed to provide cancer patients and their loved ones with an additional parking option while helping preserve the limited parking spaces closest to the Cancer Centre for those with mobility challenges and accessibility needs. Previously, when the Cancer Centre parking spaces are full, cancer patients have been directed to use the main visitor lot in front (north side) of Met Campus, which even if available creates a long pathway for cancer patients to reach the southwest corner of the property.
Cancer patients will receive a permit to place on their vehicle dashboard or mirror confirming their registration to use the Kildare shuttle lot, which will continue to be monitored to ensure appropriate use of parking.
“We have heard from patients and families about the challenges of finding parking when coming for cancer treatment,” said Kristin Kennedy, President and CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital. “We recognize that parking can be a source of stress at an already difficult time in a cancer patient’s journey. While this solution will not eliminate all parking challenges, it is a meaningful step that provides more options for patients and helps improve access to the Cancer Centre.”
Hundreds of patients visit the Cancer Centre each week, and demand for parking close to the facility frequently exceeds available capacity. As is the case with many urban hospitals, WRH’s existing campuses are landlocked, limiting opportunities for significant parking expansion at its current sites.
“We know the last thing a patient undergoing cancer treatment needs is the added stress of searching for a parking space,” said Brandon Bailey, Vice President of Redevelopment, Windsor Regional Hospital. “This initiative makes better use of existing parking resources while supporting the patients who need close-access parking the most. It allows us to improve access today while we continue planning for the significant parking improvements that are coming with the new hospital.”
WRH will continue exploring additional parking solutions, including ongoing productive and collaborative discussions with the City of Windsor regarding opportunities to increase street parking for cancer patients around the Met Campus.
A Long-Term Commitment to Better Parking Access
Addressing parking challenges has been a key priority in planning for the future Fancsy Family Hospital. The new hospital will double parking capacity compared to our current facilities, include a larger lot dedicated to cancer patients, and feature a patient-only parkade that will maximize close parking access adjacent to key programs such as the Cancer Centre.
“We all have loved ones who have been impacted by cancer and understand the stress and uncertainty that comes with treatment,” said Bailey. “The last thing patients and families should have to worry about is finding a parking space. The challenges we experience today have reinforced the importance of building a better solution for the future.”
Until the new hospital opens, WRH remains committed to identifying practical solutions that improve access and reduce barriers for patients and families receiving care today.
